Although the date of foundation is unknown, Soya Itsukushima Shrine is believed to have been built in 1781 or 1782. The first recorded donation is dated 1869. In May of 1898, Kihei Kashiwatani, a contractor in Soya, repaired the shrine, while serving in Soya, the Kaitakushi (Hokkaido Development Commissioner), Judge Takeda, repaired the shrine and dedicated a wooden torii (shrine gate). Since Soya has long been a strategic location for transportation to Karafuto, those traveling to Karafuto would visit the head shrine and offer thanks and there was a branch shrine of the head shrine in Omari, which was worshipped by both the head shrine and the visitors.
Some parts of the shrine are closed during the winter.
