Yohtaka Andon Festival in Numata – One of Hokkaido’s Top Summer Lantern Events
The Yohtaka Andon Festival takes place annually on the fourth Friday and Saturday of August in Numata, Hokkaido. This vibrant summer celebration is recognized as one of Hokkaido’s three major andon (paper lantern) festivals.
Giant, brightly lit andon float through the streets, creating a magical atmosphere and drawing large crowds to this unique cultural event. As night falls, the festival reaches its dramatic peak with a lantern battle, where five massive andon collide in a symbolic showdown. The intentional destruction of the lanterns is believed to ward off evil spirits and welcome good fortune to the community.
Experience the energy, tradition, and beauty of this unforgettable Hokkaido summer festival.
