Ainu Textiles, Embroidery & Patterns

Headbands called “matampus”. It was mainly used so that hair did not get in the way when you went hunting in the mountains. Some have tapered ends (photo above) and others were just a long straight bit of material.

To express fondness for a man, Ainu women would usually give an embroidered hand ornament called “tek-un-pe”. They would sew their feelings with every stroke of the needle as they made it.

The swirly “morew” / The thorn-shaped “ay-us”

This entire back pattern of the pattern is called the “sermak” and serves to protect the body of the wearer (Tenri Sankokan Museum collection)
