SINCE 1964
Olympia Coffee Shop opened in 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics. For over 60 years since then, we have been serving delicious coffee and meals to the people of Sapporo, maintaining the same atmosphere we’ve had since our early days.
☕ What is a "Jun-kissa"?
The term 純喫茶 (Jun-kissa) in the name has a specific historical meaning in English:
- Literal Meaning: "Pure Coffee Shop."
- The History: In the early 20th century, some "coffee shops" in Japan began serving alcohol and employing waitresses to sit with customers (similar to modern hostess bars). To distinguish themselves, traditional shops used the word "Jun" (Pure) to indicate they only served coffee, tea, and light meals—no alcohol.
- Today's Context: Nowadays, it mostly implies a retro, old-school, or "Showa-era" vibe.
