The Asahikawa Winter Festival is the second largest winter festival in Hokkaido. The first is Sapporo Snow Festival. This festival starts in early February, about the same time as the Sapporo Snow Festival. So it is possible to visit both festivals if you come to Hokkaido around this time. It's roughly an 80-minute train ride between both cities.
Asahikawa usually has the largest snow sculpture in Hokkaido. There is a sculpted snow stage for music and other performances also fireworks on the first and last days.
A free shuttle bus can take you to the venue from the Asahikawa station in about 5 to 10 minutes and then to the zoo. It's usually nice to just walk there and check out the shops, cafes and restaurants along Heiwadori Shopping Street though. It's about a 20 minute walk.
In 1994, the Korean Fortress snow stage made into the book of Guinness World Records as the largest snow construction built.
