Uncover the hidden gem of Hokkaido, the Tokachi region, a vast expanse of plains. This region, though not suitable for rice cultivation, has carved out its own identity with the production of Tokachi wine.

Despite the climatic challenges of Hokkaido, with its sparse spring rains and generally chilly temperatures, the region has found that autumn provides the perfect environment for grape cultivation. The longer days and significant temperature fluctuations between day and night result in grapes with an ideal balance of acid and sugar.

At the heart of Tokachi wine production is the Ikeda Wine Castle, a scenic landmark with panoramic views of the Hidaka Mountains. Built during a period when Tokachi wine was becoming popular. The castle is encircled by vineyards and houses over 200 French oak barrels used for the production of Japanese sparkling wines, similar to the champagne production process in France.

Visitors can explore the castle, sample a variety of wines and brandies, and even shop for local products. The castle also offers cozy seating areas with stunning views, perfect for unwinding during the colder seasons.

The region’s signature wines are made from a type of grape called Kiyomi, producing a wine that perfectly captures the spirit of Tokachi with its soft hue, invigorating acidity and rich flavors. The success of Kiyomi has led to the introduction of two additional grape brands, Kiyomai and Yamasachi, both of which have garnered numerous national awards and accolades.

In addition to the original Kiyomi wine, the region is also renowned for its sparkling wines, made in the champagne style. These wines retain natural carbon dioxide from the second fermentation, resulting in a sophisticated and bubbly wine with a deep flavor profile due to its aging, bouquet and amino acid composition. These wines are versatile and pair well with both meat and fish.

Ikeda Wine Castle offers a perfect blend of tradition and innovation in the world of wine production.
